The idea of an intelligent, capable, and independent woman who has her own skills, aspirations, and agendas that do not include a man, how refreshing! Having read hundreds of historical romance novels i have had many encounters with worthy heroines, yet Michele offered a unique essence when creating Mhairi that made this novel truly enjoyable.
"He finally understood his brothers. He finally understood what it was to have a sonuachar. A soul mate."
The opening pages greeted me with a slightly less amiable individual in Conan McTiernay. I quickly grasped a solid strength and self assurance in Conan which is quite likable, but i also perceived an almost pompous cocksure attitude in most of Conan's interactions which was an ingenious character development from Michele. My early opinions of Conan aided in me understanding him at a deeper level as i dove further into the novel. Conan is an extremely intelligent man whom has great aspirations for himself that he has always envisioned as a solitary venture. Conan is not accustomed to interacting with people with his same intellectual thoughts and pursuits, quit often he is short and unknowingly rude to those around him as he operates on facts and reason vs. emotion. Conan unbeknownst to himself has delved himself into a lonely existence, preferring his books and maps over human interaction. Love and marriage are something that Conan would never consider until he meets Mhairi.
"He has his whole life planned and never once considered including anyone in those dreams, especially not a wife. But if you love him, find a way to make it work. Find a way to be together and create new dreams that you can share."
Mhairi was a truly enjoyable individual for me to grow to understand throughout this novel. Mhairi is not a stranger to hardship and was raised to be a survivor, envisioning herself traveling the world experiencing everything life has to offer with her Merchant father and sister. Exceptionally gifted academically Mhairi has a brilliant intelligent mind, as well as being a phenomenal artist. Mhairi's strengths are not limited to books and drawings, she has the will to survive as well as various skill sets... dagger throwing included. When Mhairi accepts assistance from the McTiernay clan her world is thrown into upheaval when she encounters her duplicate in male form. Conan.
I could not help but feel intrigued as the plot of this novel developed, the thought of another individual being your complete and utter match on every plain in life, how titillating. It is not everyday that someones lonely existence is suddenly eradicated by another with the same thoughts, passions, and capabilities. Michelle did a wondrous job building a swath of wonder around these two characters while still making the seemingly perfect union fairly impossible. Two impossibly stubborn souls too set in their own course to realize the bliss that could be theirs. A very cleverly woven tail of love nearly lost and distant conspiracies awaiting in the horizon.
"I truly cannot live without you. If you were ever to learn how to draw a person's soul, Mhairi, and you drew mine, you would discover that you were drawing yourself."
I own and have thoroughly enjoyed all of Michele Sinclair's novels, my expectancy for pure brilliance was exceptionally high as i read this novel. Though very pleased i was not utterly dazzled like i have been in the past. I simply cannot wait for further installments from the MacTiernays, this book ends with a cliff hanger large enough to make you jump out of your seat... i was furious i could not simply keep reading to see what would happen next. Props to you Michele!
