I picked up this novel with high expectations and was not disappointed. I will admit that i felt some frustration throughout the novel with our heroine Isobel. I found her stubborn mindset and intentional "blindness" to what was blatantly in front of her to be drawn out and lacking depth.
Admittedly i admired our tall, and dark hero Ker from the beginning chapters. I was drawn to his humor, strength, determination, and self assurance. From the first pages you know who Ker is as a character and exactly what he wants. I understood his concerns, strengths, and weaknesses. Ker was shaped dramatically by his dark family history and his fear of carrying "tainted blood". Despite his crippling fears Ker is determined to have Isobel as his own and knows with every ounce of his being that there is no other woman for him, only Isobel.
Isobel is a stunningly gorgeous and clever woman that believes it is her responsibility to balance the scales of right and wrong by setting brilliant traps for those in her clan that she feels are deserving of punishment. There is no one Isobel is more determined to have fall into one of her traps than Ker. Both characters butt heads in what seems like a constant back and forth parlay. full of angst and sexual tension Isobel though thrilled going toe to toe verbally with Ker uses this as a way to keep herself emotionally unavailable, unwilling to let Ker in through her icy flawless exterior. Isobel is frozen in the past by a distant memory she cannot let go off, memories of feeling spurned bubble into her chest every time she considers letting Ker closer to her heart. Ker is virtually unawares of his fatal misstep many years ago and refuses to give up on a future with the woman he unknowingly loves.
The setting of the novel finds the characters in uncertain dangerous times with threats from unknown sources hovering over Kerr and Isobel's loved ones and allies. When Isobel's ultimate trap for Ker results in both characters isolated in the wilderness running for their lives, truths from the past bubble to the surface as their love for each other grows. Both characters navigate unimaginable danger as the truths to hidden dangers are unwoven.
The 5th installation of Alyson McLayne's The Sons of Gregor MacLeod series was a wonderfully woven action packed novel. I look forward to her upcoming releases!
Book Bio
"This kind of story is the reason why people are in love with the highlands and the mythical men and women who once roamed the moors."―Kerrigan Byrne, USA Today bestselling author
When a Highland laird decides to marry, nothing can stand in his way...not even the bride.
No one ever accused Kerr MacAlister of being a nice man. Everyone would agree, however, that when the laird makes a promise, nothing can stop him. Which is why everyone knows Isobel MacKinnon will end up his wife.
Isobel spent most of her childhood in love with the tall, dark, and sexy Scot. It wasn't until she was fifteen and failed to entice Kerr into kissing her that things turned sour. Now, Kerr is the one trying to entice her, but Isobel won't be swayed...no matter how tempting he might be.
Then Kerr discovers she may be eloping with someone else, and he has a choice to make―is this Highlander's fate to steal her away himself, to a place where both love and danger lurk, or let her go and face losing her forever?
