The second installment of Mary Morgan's Order of the Dragon Knights envelopes the reader into a world wrapped within the mists of time. Much like the other novels in this series i followed both main characters as they tried to navigate through unknown dangers, fate, and their own stubborn beliefs. This novel has a few key differences from the first novel in the series but many similarities in the story line that at times left me wanting for more diversity.
"They were an ancient order, descended from the great Tuatha De Danann, the Sidhe, or in simpler terms, the fae. Half human and half fae, each one blessed with mystical powers. Each warrior given Holy Relics from the Tuatha De Danann and guardianship over their Dragons."
Much like his brother Duncan, I followed Stephen MacKay as he struggled with his own deep wrought pain and scorn of anything related to his heritage and the fae. Wracked with visions that would leave him incapacitated for days and terrified at what they could mean Stephen was on a path to self destruction as an unknown evil continued to wrap its evil fingers around the lands and Stephen's soul.
Since the death of her mother Aileen has cast herself into a happy life of seclusion unknowingly avoiding her fae heritage keeping herself away from civilization and the voices of everyone's thoughts. When Aileen and her sisterhood of likewise gifted women receive an invitation from her father in Scotland, Aileen is reluctant to expose herself to feelings she has locked away for her own self preservation. Unbeknownst to Aileen, traveling to Scotland envelopes her in a long awaited destiny and a heritage that she never knew she had. As Aileen uncovers secrets kept from her by the people she holds most dear she finds herself tumbling through the sands of time and cast into a world she was only just beginning to discover existed.
"Your mother's vision of your like ending here in Scotland, and the journal of Stephen MacKay could only mean you will indeed travel back to the thirteenth century..."
Aileen Kerrigan is a ray of light cast into Stephen's dark existence from worlds away funneled through the veils of time. Everything about Aileen speaks fae and reminds Stephen of all of the things he has convinced himself to hate. Despite every warning bell frantically chiming in Stephen's brain for him to avoid Aileen at all costs he is somehow drawn to her with every fiber of his being.
"For Stephen MacKay, the light of redemption and love will come from the very source he seeks to escape"
Unknown to both Aileen and Stephen their souls are cast together for a greater purpose. Aileen is meant to heal Stephen's soul and help him find redemption. Along the way Aileen finds her own truths and the heritage she never knew she had. Secrets, evil, and many obstacles plague both characters happiness and very lives.
"As Surely as the sun will dawn and set each day, I will forever love you--evermore."
~Stephen's vow to Aileen
The further i delved into this plot many of the characters that i had made a connection with in the first novel where key figures in this novel as well. I highly recommend reading this series in chronological order as each book is closely connected to the others. Mary did leave me with a continuous sense of impending doom as the evil in the plot continued to strengthen until the climax in the ending chapters. The reader is given information that is withheld from key characters in the novel which made me sit on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. Overall this is a solid novel and a good read for anyone that enjoys magic, mystery, love, and hardship. Unlike the previous novels I read by Mary this one i got stuck in periodically as many of the events seemed to mirror the prior novel. Despite this i will happily continue my journey throughout this series and encourage my followers to do so as well!
Follow Mary's Dragon Knight's as they find their paths to redemption with the woman fate so graciously decides to bestow upon them....
Book Bio
To right a wrong, two souls are brought together only to shatter when they are torn apart by the deeds of an evil druid.
Dragon Knight, Stephen MacKay’s powers are altered after the death of his sister. Now he is plagued with visions that threaten to destroy his soul. When Aileen Kerrigan falls through a time tunnel, he vows to keep her safe, despite the fact the beautiful but head-strong half-blooded fae could be the death of him.
When Aileen finds out her dad is a Fenian Warrior, she flees to a nearby ruin. Armed with the medallion her mother gave her, and a matching one belonging to a long dead knight, she is flung into the past and finds a handsome but surly warrior who is on a quest. Now it seems her future could be entwined with his, if she doesn’t kill him first.
